Ralph Nader has been a famous voice for popular resentments against corporations since his 1965
book Unsafe at Any Speed took the automobile industry to task for its willingness to overlook safety issues in the
interest of higher profits. His 2000 Presidential campaign, in which he captured 2.9 million votes, may have cost
Al Gore the election.
Nader supports:
- Restoration of civil liberties (repeal of the Patriot Act, an end to secret detentions of supposed terrorists at Guantanamo, arrests without charges, no access to attorneys and the use of secret "evidence" in prosecutions)
- Equal legal rights for homosexuals, including the right to marry
- Greater protection of the environment
- Increased taxes on corporations, addictive industries (alcohol and tobacco), pollution, speculation, gambling and extreme luxuries
- Retention of the estate tax
- Replacement of US troops in Iraq with UN troops
- Impeachment inquiry of President Bush for engaging in an unconstitutional war in Iraq and for justifying the reasons for the invasion with falsehoods
